In 1951 Wired Radio Service Ltd (later to become Rediffusion Consumer Electronics Ltd) acquired a factory at Surbiton for the manufacture, in the first instance, of 17" projection receivers developed at the Wandsworth factory.

A good deal of internal alteration was necessary to prepare the factory for the manufacture of television receivers after it was taken over in the autumn of 1951. Internal walls had to be pulled down, while the lighting
and heating needed completely reorganising.

A Coil Winding Department was set up and a simple hand winder, as used by Redifon, adopted, this being a most efficient winder for the types of coils required.
Screened cages, designed by Redifon, were set up to allow proper receiver tests to be undertaken.

All the components for the wiring stages were made available in trays immediately in front of the operator, these being replenished weekly by progress. By this method the handling of the chassis was reduced to a minimum and all the components required for the particular operation were placed within easy reach of the operator.

Each line had its own inspector and a rigid inspection was carried out followed by a test of each chassis. The
chassis were finally assembled in the cabinets and a further inspection carried out, followed by a further
very comprehensive test after which the sets were soak tested for eight hours. The cabinets were then polished and boxed in special cartons ready for despatch.
A nucleus of staff taken over from the previous owners formed the backbone of the staff in the factory. Many additional staff were taken on and, without exception, these were mainly unskilled and had been trained to the standard required for television manufacture. The I7" diagonal projector set was designed and prototyped at the Redifon factory at Wandsworth.
